This series draws from explorations of heraldry in the Anglo-Saxon, Japanese, and Indian traditions. Heraldry, as a visual language, serves to identify, protect, and communicate meaning through shapes and symbols rather than words. The shields are meant as protection for particular people close to me and as homage to others I admire. I form these portraits by assembling abstract shapes, patterns, and objects imbued with symbolic significance.
